Taste of the Caribbean Competition
PRESS RELEASE
BVI POISED TO BRING HOME THE GOLD FROM THE REGIONAL CULINARY
COMPETITION IN PUERTO RICO
Tuesday, 7 September 2010:
The BVI National Culinary Team leaves the BVI on Thursday, September 9th to take part in the annual Taste of the Caribbean competition at the Rio Del Mar Hotel in Puerto Rico from September 9-12, 2010.
The team comprises Head Coach Chef Henry Prince, H. Lavity Stoutt Community College; Team Captain Chef Kenneth Molyneaux, Treasure Isle Hotel; Chefs Imran Ashton, Charlie's; Peter Hamil, Long Bay Beach Resort; Junior Chef Jason Dalmida Jr., Bitter End Yacht Club; Pastry Chefs Macgarvey Thompson, H. Lavity Stoutt Community College; Ansony Salmon, Peter Island Resort & Spa; Nevile Tucker, Long Bay Beach Resort; and Bartender Elton Sprauve, Mine Shaft Cafe.
The BVI National Culinary Team has won Gold, Silver and Bronze medals in previous years and aims to recapture the Gold Medal for the BVI in 2010. Over the past several months, the chefs and bartender have been honing their skills through a series of practice sessions at the H. Lavity Stoutt Community College (HLSCC), and pre-competition dinners at Maria's by the Sea Hotel &Restaurant, Treasure Isle Hotel, Rosewood Little Dix Bay, and Peter Island Resort.
This year's competition features culinary teams from 11Caribbean countries and territories: Antigua, Barbados, Bahamas, BVI, Curacao, Dominican Republic, Jamaica, Puerto Rico, St. Lucia, Trinidad and Tobago, and the USVI. The teams will participate in qualifying rounds of "live kitchen" competitions, as they prepare a three-course meal in less than four hours using a mystery basket of ingredients that is kept secret until the competition begins. The event also provides educational opportunities through seminars, workshops, tastings and demonstrations designed to enhance performance, style and creativity in Caribbean cuisine.
The entire BVI community is invited to come to the T.B. Lettsome International Airport this Thursday September 9th, at 9:30a.m. to wish the team members well as they depart for Puerto Rico.
The BVI Chamber of Commerce and Hotel Association, the presenting organization for the BVI National Culinary Team, would like to thank all of those who supported the team, especially our loyal guests who attended the pre-competition dinners and provided invaluable feedback; our premium sponsors: the Premier's Office, National Bank of the Virgin Islands, Ocean Conversion and Road Town Wholesale; those who opened their kitchens for practice and dinners, as well as those who contributed in other ways, including HLSCC, the BVI Tourist Board, TICO Wines and Spirits, and One Mart Super Store.
